How to choose a tennis racket
Head size, weight, string pattern and grip size explained, so you can pick a tennis racket that suits your game.
The short answer
Most adult improvers do well with a head size of around 100 to 105 square inches and a mid-weight frame. A bigger head is more forgiving; a smaller head is more precise.
Head size
Around 98 square inches and below is control focused and suits experienced players.
Around 100 is the all-round default.
105 and above is very forgiving.
Weight
Lighter frames are easier to swing and suit beginners and juniors. Heavier frames are more stable and give more power through the ball, but need better technique and fitness.
String pattern
An open pattern (for example 16 by 19) gives more spin and power.
A denser pattern (for example 18 by 20) gives more control and durability.
Grip size
Most adults use size 2 or 3 (L2 or L3 in UK sizing). If unsure, go smaller and add an overgrip.
Try before you buy
Many coaches and clubs have demo rackets.
Questions
Is a heavier racket better?
Not automatically. Heavier frames are more stable and give more power through the ball, but need better technique and fitness.
What head size for a beginner?
Around 100 to 105 square inches is a common choice.
Do I need to restring straight away?
Rackets bought unstrung need stringing, so ask the retailer. Many players restring once or twice a year, depending on how often they play.
